What is the purpose of the staff shirts?

In 2011, Academic Enhancement surveyed just under 400 students who came for peer tutoring at The Study at least once. We got much valuable feedback, but perhaps the most important issue brought to our attention was the difficulty some students have navigating The Study and feeling comfortable in a busy, sometimes hectic space. Below are some of the comments we received:

  • ” . . . it is somewhat difficult to locate someone to help me . . .”
  • “I felt nervous because there were so many people [and] subjects . . . “
  • “Sometimes overwhelming.”
  • “Really helpful, just slightly overwhelming . . . “

While staff shirts are not the sole answer to making students feel comfortable on even our busiest nights, they are a great start. We will still depend on tutors to greet tutees as they sit down, regularly check in on tutees working independently or in small groups, and look available and happy to help. However, one of Academic Enhancement’s goals is to empower students to take active roles in their academic careers. Thus it makes sense that we empower tutees to actively seek out tutors. To that end, staff shirts will help tutees identify tutors when they have questions or need assistance. Additionally, staff shirts will also help tutees realize how many tutors are on staff for a particular subject. SPC’s and I have discovered that many students who are reluctant to come in on busy nights don’t realize that many tutors are on staff. Knowing there are plenty of tutors on hand–or realizing that there are only a few when we’ve experienced an unexpected surge in traffic–can help students know what to expect. Also, our unique model of drop-in, small group tutoring can be confusing to those who have only experienced individual tutoring. Enabling them to look around and see that “the people in green shirts” are the peer tutors will demystify our model and help students feel at ease and take full advantage of peer tutoring.

Why do we also wear nametags?

Each tutor wears a lanyard that identifies them by name and subject, which enables tutees to identify tutors with which they have worked and indicates which subject(s) the tutor is on duty for. However, it is almost impossible to distinguish who is a tutor from a distance with just the lanyards. Many tutees wear lanyards, and often the lanyards tutors have been required to wear are easily obscured by outerwear, laptops, and tables. The staff shirts will make it much easier for tutees to spot a tutor and indicate to that tutor he or she would like assistance.

How many shirts will I get?

You will receive–free of charge–a number of shirts equal to the number of shifts you work minus one. (Everyone will receive a minimum of one staff shirt, however.) For example, if you work four shifts, you will receive three shirts.

How can I purchase more t-shirts?

T-shirts will be available for purchase on the Staff Resource Page. Tutors will be able to click the “Purchase T-Shirts” link to access an online form and payment portal where they can pay with a debit or credit card. After the payment is processed, you, your SPC, and Katie Voigts–the SPC tasked with t-shirt management–will receive an electronic receipt. You can show the receipt to any SPC on duty, and that SPC will give you your shirt(s).

What are the consequences for coming to a shift without my staff shirt?will give you your shirt(s).

Because tutors will not be permitted to work without a staff shirt, showing up to a shift without a shirt is tantamount to not showing up at all. The consequences for not having a staff shirt for a shift will be the same as those for an Uncovered Shift. See the Uncovered Shift section in the Absence portion of the Staff Resource Manual.

What should I do if I want to pick up a shift at the last minute and do not have a shirt on hand?

Tutors will not be permitted to work without a staff shirt. Thus, you will have to decide if taking the shift is worth getting a shirt from home or purchasing one before your shift. If you often pick up shifts, you may consider leaving a shirt in your mailbox.

I get cold very easily; will I be able to wear a jacket?

No, you will not be able to wear a jacket, as it obscures The Study logo and “Staff” on the back of the shirt, making it more difficult for tutees to spot you. However, you will be provided with a sweatshirt bearing The Study logo. The sweatshirt will be the same color as the t-shirts so that you can be easily spotted by tutees.

If I am dressed up for a certain occasion will I have to change?

Yes. Though we’re sure you look very professional in your presentation or interview outfit, you will be expected to wear your staff shirt once you are on duty in The Study.

Can I keep my shirt in the mail room in Academic Enhancement’s offices?

You are free to keep your staff shirt(s) in your mailbox in AE’s offices. Note that this is at your own risk. If your shirt disappears, you will be responsible for purchasing a new shirt. Also, papers will still be placed in your mailbox, so you will need to check regularly to make sure nothing is crumpled at the back of your mailbox.

What should I do if my shirt is wrinkled?

We will be keeping Downy Wrinkle Releaser on hand in the mailroom for this purpose. You are welcome to use it any time. If your shirt is noticeably wrinkled you may be asked to use it.

If my shirt gets worn out, stained, or torn will I have to buy a new one?.

Yes. AE will replace shirts each academic year, but if your shirts are stained, torn, etc. to the point at which they look sloppy, you will be required to purchase a new shirt. This means that you should treat them with care.

How often will Academic Enhancement replace staff shirts?

AE will replace shirts each academic year.

Can I wear other UK or AE shirts during my shifts?

You can wear your staff shirt outside of The Study. The only time you are asked not to wear the shirt is when you are in The Study but not on duty. The reason being that when you are in The Study as a tutee or visitor we do not expect and do not want tutees to expect you to provide tutoring. Wearing your staff shirt while receiving tutoring or visiting may give tutees the impression that you are a tutor that cannot or will not assist them. Equally important to note is that when you wear a staff shirt, you are representing Academic Enhancement. We ask you to be cognizant of that and will expect you to act accordingly.
